What ‘kills’ a bold colour and how to avoid it…

This week’s Style Post is prompted by a fabulous Style Post reader. She recently bought a great pair of red wide leg trousers. This instantly brought me joy! Her go-to top for these trousers is a black long-sleeved t-shirt or jumper. Whilst I love that she is so on brand, black can often ‘kill’ a bold colour and make the outfit look dull and rather dated. Don’t get me wrong – I love a black top (I own many!) but there are other colour options that can look more stylish and ‘lift’ that bold piece in your wardrobe.

Our conversation inspired me to do the same with my own wardrobe. Here are just a few outfit combinations using my favourite, red, Amanda Wakeley trousers.

Keeping it tonal with red and oxblood accessories.

Adding a crisp white shirt (or t-shirt) instantly lifts the red. Adding neutral accessories keeps the look fresh and modern.

Camel and red is a beautiful colour combination. If camel isn’t your most flattering shade – opt for a V-neck or add a white t-shirt underneath to lift the colour – it will make the world of difference.

Keeping the look soft and pretty with a silky halter-neck and pastel accessories – red and pink is a match made in MKS heaven.

Next time you reach for that black top – stop - switch it up and see the versatility in that bold item hanging in your wardrobe.

You’re very welcome
